Theme song!

"The Sunday Service Theme Song"

Don Steele (Middle)

Don Steele was working the Hartford Advocates Grand Band Slam @ Coaches where we played Live. After our set he introduced himself and stated that we were "A great band and he had a blast." So we talked for a while about the local music scene and I stated we also have our own music recorded and how hard it is to play your own music around here. So we came up with a plan to get our music on the radio and get passed all the politics. So Don asked us to write a theme song for his Sunday Service show on WCCC. Pretty cool don't ya think.

Mike G. of "The Degenerates" VS. Greg G.  of " The Kelvin's"

Bands do some funny things at times, so  I thought this was worth posting. This was a on going love\hate letter from 2 struggling musicians. So we'll title this.....My band is better than your band!

08.02.02 - Last night's Band Slam gig was a hell of a good time. We debuted [why does that word look so wrong in print?] a new song [The Real You] and I got to play my new acoustic guitar and sit on a stool for a couple of songs - very MTV Unplugged. Coach's was a great [if inappropriate] venue: lots of friends on hand, lots of happy strangers as well. WCCC's Don Steele and some reps from The Hartford Advocate were there to host the gig and give everyone free shite. After our set, I watched a little of the next band, Little Yellow Box [cool in an "At the Drive-In" sort of way], then caught a bit O' Swivel Hips outside - very cool despite the so-so mix. Throughout the evening, I saw Rane [always superlative], Throne [couldn't really hear them], The Degenerates [I'd hoped for some decent punk, but played lots of "trash rock" covers - what a disappointment] and The Thang [viva la Funk!]. Bands I'm sorry I missed: Grey Cell Green, Sibil and Meat & Potatoes.

Ahhh, The Kelvin's... So glad you took the time to trash talk our band, not to mention a few others. If you actually took the time to SEE what we (The Degenerates) are up on that stage for (To have fun and KEEP PEOPLE FROM FALLING ASLEEP FROM HEARING NEO-DAVE MATTHEWS BANDS OR THAT GENRE OF MUSIC) you would see that we  really take this all that seriously. I'm so glad you are so arrogant, that you can put yourselves above all other bands. Let me tell you something, We could put our original songs up against the best of them. Not everyone may like it, but it's not always the song, we have fun with covers and originals, But we give people who see us a show like bands used to. The whole idea is to create the "ROCK SHOW" not a sleep-fest. So go on and keep being bitter, which is too bad you are, 'cause we on the other hand will keep on making new friends and keep on rocking'. So I will end this with a great big PISS OFF-ASSHOLE... Mike -
I'll piss off in a minute, but first I want to clarify a few things. First, I think you misunderstood my post. I wasn't trying to trash your band, or be "arrogant", just commenting that I was hoping to hear original music. You did a hell of a job entertaining the people there. Your band seemed tight and energetic, and you had the audience in the palm of your hand - probably the most difficult thing for a band to pull off. Second, I hate boring drone of bands like the DMB and their ilk. Third, I'm going to write an apology to you and your crew on my site. This may mean nothing to you, but I feel like I did you an injustice [as your hate mail pointed out], and you deserve one.
As for the original VS. cover thing, I've been a huge supporter of the original scene around Hartford for a long time, and just happen to prefer hearing originals. When I heard that you'd won "People's Choice", I was really expecting originals. I'm not bitter, as anyone who knows me will tell you, nor am I arrogant. Right now I feel like a bit of an asshole, though,  mostly because so much negativity was read into my quickly-written sentence regarding your band. Sorry about that.
One last thing - the term "trash rock" was something that just popped into my head as a genre label for the brand of rock you were doing - it was not meant as a slight either, but I'll have to clarify that on my site as well. I'll end this without a great big PISS OFF ASSHOLE, but maybe with a gig opportunity - call it a peace offering. Let me know if you're interested.

08.05.02 - After my last, admittedly hasty post, I got a bit of hate mail from Mike of The Degenerates. Mike was a bit pissed about my quick and unflattering assessment of their band and basically ripped me up and down about it. Well, I need to suck it up and apologize to Mike and The Degenerates, because, in retrospect, I didn't give them a fair shake. They were tight, played well and had the audience in the palm of their hands. The term "trash rock" was a reference to some of their song choices ["Talk Dirty To Me" by Poison comes immediately to mind...]. It was a reference to the songs, not the band. Take this for what it's worth.

hey Greg, I guess like you, I should apologize for going over the top. I guess It bothers me when someone rips up you and your buds for doing what you do, and what you've worked very hard for. Like I said, we do the originals, but clubs don't demand that, they want the covers. All we want to do is play, and entertain people. Again, sorry for blasting you. Good Luck.  Mike G.

The Degenerates

Here's a band that is new to the Band Slam even though they've been around for five years. They used to play all originals but have switched to covers due to club demands, and often open for AC/DC or Ozzy Osbourne tribute bands. They recently won the Rock Wars sponsored by Radio 104, competing against 20 bands that initially entered the eight-week competition. Their winnings include recording time in a studio, $2500 cash, and airplay on Radio 104 of their song "Pretty Good." They've already recorded more than 50 original songs. The key for them is not to overkill any of the instruments; their chemistry is one of their strongest points
